Toyota is expanding its range of fuel cell vehicles: Who looks for a new car on www.toyota.de, finds under the column “Brennstoffzelle“ immediately also the Jaxa moon mobile – “Coming soon” with price on inquiry.

The Rover moon vehicle, on which Toyota is currently working together with the Japanese Space Agency JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), uses the same fuel cell technology as the Toyota Mirai sedan (fuel consumption hydrogen combined 0.76 kg/100 km; power consumption combined 0 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 0 g/km) here on earth.

The Jaxa Mondmobil has to make an effort to keep up with the sales figures of the Toyota Mirai - the 10,000th model has already rolled off the assembly line in Japan. This makes the Mirai the most produced fuel cell vehicle in the world.

The automotive group and the Space Agency have been researching rover studies for moon exploration since May 2018, and work has now begun on a concrete manned moon vehicle. As part of the three-year project, prototypes will be jointly manufactured, tested and evaluated. The aim is to explore the lunar surface as part of international projects. This would enable the rover to compete seriously with the Mirai.

The advancement of fuel cell technology is part of the corporate vision „Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050“.In it, the Japanese automobile manufacturer has set out a number of long-term goals for reducing CO2 emissions from its vehicles and plants. Hydrogen-powered vehicles play a special role here: as waste products, they emit only water, no CO2 and no other harmful gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. With the lunar vehicle and the Mirai, Toyota demonstrates that fuel cell vehicles are an important form of propulsion for the future - on Earth and in space.
